We are pleased to announce the appointment of Richard Harrill to the position of Director of the Campus Y in the Division of Student Affairs. Richard  will join our division on Monday, August 3, 2009 following the retirement of Virginia Carson. He comes to us as the Director for Europe of the Public Interest Law Institute, in Budapest, Hungary, an organization building the advocacy capacity of NGOs (non-governmental organization), promoting clinical legal education, legal aid reform and pro bono practice in Central and Eastern Europe, Russia and Asia. Before heading overseas Richard became a youth policy coordinator at Columbia University School of Social Work, where he researched international civic engagement and school-to-work transitions studies.  He also worked at Bard College Program on Globalization and International Affairs and at the Bonner Foundation, where he developed an analytic framework for evaluating the Bonner Scholars Program.

Richard is no stranger to UNC or the Campus Y.  He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1991 and Juris Doctorate in 1998.  While at the university he served as co-president of the Y where he worked as a volunteer at the local homeless shelter and served on the board of the Campus Outreach Opportunity League.

Richard is excited and committed to being the Director for the Campus Y.  In this position he hopes to bring a diverse set of experiences and skills to the Y.  He will bring a practitioner’s understanding of nonprofits, human rights and civil society and a genuine enthusiasm for working with Carolina students.  With his professional and personal networks in New York and Central and Eastern Europe, would prove to benefit the Y and the students.  Please join us in congratulating and welcoming Richard to the University.
