Technology Without Borders
Mission and Main Activities PDF Print E-mail

Technology Without Borders has been founded for the purpose of engaging the local communities in applying technology to address education and healthcare issues domestically and abroad.

Main Activities

Geek-A-Thons

These are low-commitment, on-day events which where we shuttle students to Durham to help refurbish used computers to be donated to local schools and students.  These events occur several times a semester and assume no technical knowledge whatsoever.  Students will have the opportunity to learn how to take apart a computer and rebuild it from scratch while working on a constructive project for the community.

Digital Literacy Workshops

Technology Without Borders partners with several community organizations to provide digital literacy workshops to those who wish to develop a greater facility with computers.  In these workshops, we teach participants to perform basic tasks such as surfing the web or searching for information.   Furthermore, we also help interested participants set up an email address, type a resume, and even search for jobs.  These workshops also occur several times a semester.

Community Wireless Project

We are in the process of launching a project to provide computers as well as low-cost wireless internet to communities in Carborro and Chapel Hill.  This is a long-term project and we hope to eventually cover a major portion of our community with the reach of our internet connection.

International Telemedicine Project

As we refine the internet model we develop for the community wireless project, we hope to apply it to bring internet as well as support for telemedicine to rural clinics abroad.   This is a longer-term vision that we hope to reach in the future.
